One person has been arrested after false information was spread online regarding the recent drowning of a 13-year-old boy in Sheboygan.
The Sheboygan Police Department has said that while their investigation into the incident at Jaycee Quarry Park continues, all available information points to this being an accident.
Based on initial investigations and witness interviews, the 13-year-old boy was swimming in a non-designated area of the quarry with a group of friends when the accident occurred.
However, in the time since, Sheboygan PD has also said, “In the aftermath of this incident, false and misleading information has spread on social media. Unfortunately, this misinformation has contributed to heightened emotions and the exchange of threats among community members online.”
The department has treated these matters seriously, and investigations regarding the matter have led to an arrest.
Police are now urging the community to exhibit caution and responsibility when sharing information online, to verify facts before posting, and to understand that “speculation and rumors can only cause further harm to those already grieving.”
