An iconic moment in local history is set to be recreated.
On July 24th at 9:30 a.m., Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels and Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley will be meeting up at Manitowoc City Hall to recreate a moment in local history.
On July 9th, 1936, workers in Two Rivers found snow underground near 14th and School Street, even with the hot summer heat.
The friendly rivalry between both cities was going on during the time to see which city was the “Coolest Spot in Wisconsin”.
Ultimately, Two Rivers City Manager E.E. Donnely sent over the bucket of the snow findings to Manitowoc’s Mayor Arthur Schuetze, claiming the win for Two Rivers, now nicknamed “The Cool City.”
As inspiration from this iconic moment in history, the following year, the American Legion of Two Rivers set off the first Snow Festival, now known as SnowFest, which has become a yearly tradition.
This year marks the 50th edition of the festival and the organizers are celebrating by honoring how it came to be by this reenactment.
The 50th anniversary SnowFest is scheduled for July 25th through the 27th.
