The Manitowoc Public School District wants to do more to help students’ mental health.
The school board voted unanimously to transfer an elementary and high school counselor to a social worker while adding another social worker position.
The district reports that they haven’t had the social worker positions for years after being eliminated to have full-time counselors.
However, without both counselors and social workers, the district is missing out on the skills and knowledge of highly trained educational professionals.
Board Member Kerry Trask says he was surprised that they didn’t have social workers in the district, but is happy that it’s happening.
Chris Abel told the board he’s seen the impact they have on students.
Abel exclaimed, “As somebody who’s spent a little time in elementary schools and was there when we had social workers and know the huge difference they can play in the lives of students that are struggling, thank you!”
According to the district, data for Manitowoc County shows that help from a social worker may help 54% of high school students and 58% of middle school students who have reported experiencing anxiety, depression, or thoughts of self-harm.
The new workers could also help the district get some state aid.
