Eighty years ago, on Monday (May 5th), the city of Domazlice in the Czech Republic was liberated from the Nazi’s.
The man who announced the liberation was Two Rivers’ own Lieutenant Col. Matt Konop, whose family emigrated to Wisconsin in the 1860s.
To remember the day, Representatives from Two Rivers and Domazlice were part of a procession that included over 400 vintage World War II-era vehicles, plus hundreds of men and women in uniform and period dress.
The parade started on the outskirts of town but ended in the heart of downtown, where Konop made the announcement of liberation.
City Manager Greg Buckley also announced that special guests included 99-year-old Harry Humason, the only veteran of the World War II campaign that’s still alive, as well as the grandson of General George Patton.
