A Manitowoc police officer was injured following a short chase and struggle with an individual.
An officer on patrol Sunday saw a vehicle driving over the posted speed limit on Franklin Street near South 10th Street and turned around to conduct a traffic stop.
The officer caught up to the vehicle as it turned onto South 20th Street and activated the squad car’s emergency lights.
The driver ignored the officer and continued driving, making several turns before finally coming to a stop in the 1000 block of South 20th Street.
As the officer was calling in the situation, the driver exited the vehicle and demanded to know why he was being stopped.
Backup arrived as the initial officer made contact and asked the 29-year-old man to not walk away.
The suspect continued to resist the officers, leading to a taser being deployed.
The officers eventually wrestled the man to the ground, which caused an injury to one of the officers.
The man continued to resist, leading to another deployment of a taser, before he was finally taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a small amount of cocaine.
The man was taken to the Manitowoc County Jail on charges of Fleeing or Eluding an Officer, Resisting an Officer Resulting in Soft Tissue Damage, and Possession of Cocaine.
A passenger in the vehicle was also arrested on an outstanding warrant, as he told officers he had begged the man to stop fleeing from police.
