Police in Manitowoc have addressed the continued threat of cryptocurrency scams in the community.
Sergeant Paul Krock with the Manitowoc Police Department has said they continue to receive reports of cryptocurrency and Bitcoin scams being perpetrated in the city.
Sgt. Krock also said that scammers are often targeting older adults.
Crypto scams can originate from various sources, such as phone calls, text messages, emails, social media, and pop-up ads.
These scammers will almost always work in secrecy and with a sense of urgency when requesting a victim’s personal information and demanding payment.
Sgt. Krock continued to say that only a scammer will demand payment in cryptocurrency and that no government agency or legitimate business will request crypto as a form of payment.
Additionally, scammers often prefer trying to steal from unsuspecting victims through these means because crypto payments do not come with legal protections and are typically not reversible.
Anyone who has fallen victim to such a scam is urged to contact their local authorities regarding the incident.
