A boundary change could be coming between the Manitowoc Public School District and the Valders Area School District.
The Manitowoc Public School board voted 4-2 Tuesday (February 25th) to allow a property located outside of their district boundary to be moved.
The petition to alter the district boundaries was submitted by a parent with a student after they bought a home that would be outside the district but wanted their son to stay within the MPSD.
Board Members Matthew Phipps and Matthew Spaulding made the motion to approve the boundary change because it doesn’t affect any other family.
Keith Shaw and Chris Able voted no because of the cap in the district’s budget and that the Valders School District didn’t vote on it first.
The topic was tabled previously to give the Valders school board time to meet.
MPSD Interim Superintendent Lee Thennes recommended the denial, saying at a previous board meeting that five families would be affected by the boundary change.
Board Member “Biff” Hansen amended the motion to approve adding the one property the family owns is the only one getting annexed in.
In a statement to SeehaferNews.com, Valders School District Superintendent Kristen DeTroye explained, “This petition involves one single house, not a portion of our school district like has been stated. One family in one house has filed this petition.”
She had no other comment since the board has not voted on the issue.
They could meet today.
