“Children should not be on their cell phones during instruction.”
That was the statement from Wisconsin’s 3rd District Representative Ron Tusler during comments in the Wisconsin Legislature about a package of bills surrounding education in the state.
One of the bills includes requiring school boards to adopt policies to prohibit the use of wireless communications devices during instructional time, incorporating cursive writing into the state model English language arts standards, and requiring civics to be taught at all grade levels.
Tusler spoke specifically on cell phone usage, saying he doesn’t understand why it’s being talked about.
“The Department of Public Instruction has some role in this,” he added. “This is not a difficult issue. This is not a partisan issue. This should be something that the Department of Public Instruction should be coming out and telling schools you need to have a policy.”
He then criticized Dr. Jill Underly and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for what they do now.
“They seem to always be running away from the problem,” he stated. “I would like to see a Department of Public Instruction that runs toward the problems, that tries to figure out how do we beat some of these issues.”
Tusler also said that the package of bills was okay with the DPI as well when discussed in committee.
The Harrison Republican also explained in a newsletter that taxpayers don’t see any benefit from funding Black Lives Matter and LGBT agendas in the classroom.
