A man is dead, and another suffered hypothermia after their UTV fell through ice on Lake Winnebago.
WBAY reports that the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office was called after two people fell through open water.
Bystanders got a 56-year-old and 67-year-old man out of the water, but the 67-year-old wasn’t breathing.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies found that the UTV the 56-year-old from Fond du Lac was driving with the 67-year-old from Taycheedah was traveling south on the ice when it entered open water.
Both men were able to get out, but they were in the water for about 20 minutes before being helped.
Deputies couldn’t reach the men when they first arrived since there was a crack in the ice and nearly 20 feet of open water, however, an AED was provided and guidance to help bystanders.
The men were eventually taken to the hospital, but the Taycheedah man died while the Fond du Lac man was treated for hypothermic-related symptoms.
Sheriff’s Deputies say unfamiliarity with where the crack in the ice was appeared to have been a factor in the crash.
The incident is still under investigation.
