While Manitowoc is known for shipbuilding, it also has its place in aviation.
That’s the message from Manitowoc County EAA Chapter 383, which is trying to bring in more young people to learn about flying.
While speaking about the restoration of an RC-3 Seabee plane, the EAA taught several young people a class as part of Manitowoc County Youth Aviation.
Coordinator Kristen Eben tells SeehaferNews.com that the program was started at Valders High School, and there has been a good response.
“We meet once a month here at the hanger and we do activities with them,” she explained. “And we’ve had kid coming from not just in our county but outside of our county.”
The next step for Manitowoc County Youth Aviation is getting kids ready to build a plane, which Eben says could happen in the next five years.
However, that depends on funding and how many people participate.
Eben says anyone interested in the program can go to chapters.eaa.org/eaa383.
“We post on there each month, right on our calendar,” she noted. “There is a link to our sign up for any of our youth events or any of our activities that we have going on here at our chapter.”
Some high school students in the program are helping to rebuild the RC-3 Seabee plane so it can be put out on Menasha Avenue again.
The plane was knocked down and damaged in a storm in 2023.
