Manitowoc County’s Board Chairman wants to do more than tell his constituents, “It’s complicated” when it comes to the Human Services Department deficit.
Those were comments made by Tyler Martell during the county’s executive committee meeting Wednesday, which discussed their audit within the department.
The county already does an audit through their firm for the 2025 county budget.
But the question asked was, what can be done to prevent it from happening again?
Human Services Department Director Lori Fure explained that a consultant who helped with the audit was trained and made sure everything was done correctly, but again, finances can be “mind-bendingly complicated.”
Martell talked with board and committee members about what can be done so they can give an explanation to constituents about what happened in the department.
He hinted that could include looking at the different parts of the department and making some changes.
Fure said she was concerned about something like that.
One solution that was discussed was to have a Committee of the Whole meeting every so often to try to get the board to learn what happens in human services.
No action was taken by the Executive Committee.
