The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) warns residents of a continuing scam.
As we have previously reported, scammers have been impersonating local and state law enforcement agencies in an effort to steal money.
Scammers will call community members with a “spoofed” phone number that will appear on caller IDs as a local Sheriff’s Office or police department number.
They will then request payment for false missed court dates or to bail a loved one out of jail.
These payments are almost always via unconventional methods such as Bitcoin or gift cards.
The DATCP and surrounding law enforcement agencies have reassured residents that authorities will never request payment over the phone.
Anyone who receives such a call is urged to hang up the phone and notify authorities of the call.
