So far, the bird flu hasn’t made it into Manitowoc County.
Ag Educator Angie Ulness explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the flu was found last spring in Texas but now is really having a big impact on farms in California, with over two-thirds of the dairy farms having it.
“Rest assured that pasteurization of the milk kills it,” she said. “That’s been studied, so the milk is safe.”
There is a national milk testing strategy that the USDA is using to make sure that there are no positive cases in milk.
Ulness says tests have been going on throughout Wisconsin.
She also says bird flu is the big reason why your grocery bill has gone up.
Ulness says, “A lot of flocks had to get destroyed so that’s why you are seeing that high price in the grocery store.”
The most recent case of bird flu was found in Burnett County in December last year.
Other cases were found in Barron, Kenosha, and Washburn Counties.
