Wisconsin Public Service is offering some lighting tips as people decorate for the holidays.
One of the first things said is replacing old holiday lights with LEDs as they use up less energy than regular light bulbs.
If possible, WPS also recommends having lights on timers so they only run for so long.
If that’s not possible, it’s important to unplug light fixtures so electric bills don’t go up exponentially.
If you’re hanging lights outside, make sure to check for damaged sockets or cords and make sure the lights are meant to be hung outside.
If a ladder is used to hang lights, stay away from power lines and make sure they are fastened down to protect them from wind damage.
Lastly, outdoor cords should not be run under rugs or carpeting, and small children should not be allowed to play with light strings.
