Manitowoc’s police chief reminds residents to register their bikes with the city.
It is required by law in Clipper City to register your bike.
Police Chief Nick Reimer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that it’s important to do this because a bike can get lost or stolen, and police have a way to return it.
“Otherwise, I have a bicycle sitting here, I don’t know whose it is because somebody stole it or somebody dropped it off,” he explained. “And basically, for $2 I think it is to register it, I think it’s worth it.”
Once the bike is registered, Reimer says the city has the serial number on file.
If a bike is stolen and found either inside or outside of the city, other law enforcement agencies can report it to Manitowoc police.
According to Manitowoc’s bike ordinance, if you’re found with your bike not registered, police will notify you.
If the bike is not registered within five days, the owner will get a ticket.
Reimer says this isn’t an enforcement but more about community-oriented police to help residents.
