American Legion Post 477 out of St. Nazianz made a major donation to Old Glory Honor Flight over the weekend.
The post was hosting its Tractor Days event at Shadows Bar in School Hill, where they presented a check of $36,212 to the founders of the veteran-focused organization.
Diane MacDonald tells Seehafer News that she was overwhelmed by the amount raised during the Tee It Up Fore Troops Golf Outing.
“I had a number just because Nancy has been talking about it, but it’s almost double that. I just can’t believe it,” she said. “I am incredibly humbled that we received this money on behalf of our veterans. It just shows how much we love our veterans and how much these communities are really there to rally and support them.”
Between this year’s donation and the $10,000 raised last year, Post 477 is just shy of having raised enough to fill an entire flight all by themselves.
Nancy Schnell Rivera says this year’s donation is by far the most they have been able to give since their foundation, and that is due to the generosity of Manitowoc County.
“It feels very good,” she said. “An unknown secret is that Manitowoc County is one of the most saturated locations in the state, as far as veterans are concerned.”
The retired Army Command Sergeant Major noted that her post has grown so much over the past couple of years that they have had to change their mantra.
“Our motto used to be ‘A Small Post in a Small Community Doing Big Things,’ and now it’s just ‘A Small Community Doing Big Things for the Community,’” she explained.
Also at the event, Seehafer Broadcasting was honored to receive Post 477’s Public Relations (Radio) of the Year Award.
