Today (June 14th) is a day to recognize the US Flag. Flag Day is a holiday that celebrates the adoption of the first US Flag back in 1777.
At Felician Village in Manitowoc, their residents and member of VFW Post 659 recognized the day with a flag raising ceremony following a singing of American songs like American the Beautiful, This Land is Your Land, and Johnny Comes Marching Home.
VFW Quartermaster John Jacobs expressed his gratitude for Felician Village for hosting the ceremony to honor Flag Day but says he thinks that the day isn’t recognized as much as July 4th or Memorial Day.
“Probably because they (people) don’t get the day off,” he said jokingly. “But yeah, it does have historical significance also.”

But even though it might not be as significant as other days, Jacobs says he still feels patriotic seeing the flag.
“I get a little emotional about the flag and Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans and stuff like that,” he stated. “It’s important that people show patriotism and that they appreciate the people that have served that keep this country free.”
VFW Post 659 has been doing the ceremony at Felician Village for at least a decade.
The senior living community also recognized those in the military and those within a military family before the raising of the American Flag.
