Governor Tony Evers is moving ahead on his own with an audit of Milwaukee Public Schools.
Governor Evers announced Monday that he will hire “outside, independent” auditors to look into the financial and operational troubles at MPS, with Milwaukee city leaders and the school district on-board with the plan.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu called the decision “disappointing,” saying, “Wisconsinites deserve full transparency and accountability, not a private audit commissioned by the former DPI Superintendent who played a role in creating this disaster.”
The Oostburg resident and 9th District Senator instead recommended the Legislative Audit Bureau be called into action, noting their “long track record of transparent work on behalf of taxpayers.”
The governor has said he wants to keep politics out of the Milwaukee Public Schools audit and that independent auditors would do just that.
