The Tall Grass Ordinance for Manitowoc aims to keep the city and its family homes looking nice.
Since the ordinance’s inception, the city has seen a dramatic downturn in overgrown grass.
The ordinance is intended to ensure property owners are mowing their lawns before they grow to over 8 inches.
City workers or police will not go out and search for homes in violation, but rather, it works on a purely complaint-based basis.
While on the WCUB Breakfast Club, Mayor Justin Nickels said there are consequences for violating the ordinance.
“We have private contractors that the city has hired to go over and cut the grass,” he explained. “If it gets to that point, and you still haven’t cut your grass, and the contractor gets over there, you do get cited. We do charge for costs. It’s a $300 fine.”
Mayor Nickels went on to say that this isn’t for stray dandelions or weeds but rather for entire properties that have become overgrown.
In Two Rivers, the lawn ordinance states that grass should be kept under eight inches, and anyone who fails to keep up will be charged a $75 fine for their first offense.
All subsequent offenses will result in $150 fines.
In addition, you will be required to destroy weeds, cut the grass, and remove clippings in a timely manner, or the city will charge you to do the work for you.
