The Plymouth Police Department is reminding residents about being careful where you send your money.
The department says they’ve received another fraud case and are reminding residents not to be fooled by scammers.
The fraud case involves a victim being tricked into depositing thousands of dollars into a scammer’s Bitcoin account because they thought they were dealing with the Federal Trade Commission.
Plymouth Police say the federal government will never ask for any payment through Bitcoin or any type of cyber currency. They also shared an announcement from the Wisconsin DATCP alerting of “spoofing scams.”
That’s when a caller ID, email address, or other form of contact is falsified to trick someone into paying out money that they think they owe.
In this case, the scam was someone calling and claiming to be from the Wisconsin Public Services Commission, demanding payment and threatening to turn off power.
The DATCP says they will threaten to disconnect a utility and never demand payment over the phone. If you get a call like that, just hang up.
