Merrill’s city administrator says the fire chief of the north-central Wisconsin community returned from vacation and turned in his notice Wednesday. Chief Dave Savone said he had been thinking about retiring for the last few months. Administrator Dave Johnson says he and Savone had some differences in the way each thought employees should be treated. No formal complaints were ever filed against the chief in his five-and-a-half years on the job and he had managed to upgrade the department and the equipment it had available. Battalion Chief Scott Krause will serve as interim chief.
