An eastern Wisconsin congressman is claiming that UW-Milwaukee is siding with Hamas after a deal with student protesters a couple of weeks ago.
6th District Congressman Glenn Grothman says while he understands UWM Chancellor Mark Mone has modified his stance on the agreement with Pro-Palestinian protesters, additional statements still don’t address the difference between the “barbaric Hamas and strong western country of Israel.”
Mone recently apologized to Jewish students at the campus after the deal with pro-Palestinian protesters that made them get rid of their encampment in exchange for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Grothman reiterates his position on the Israel-Hamas War, saying Israel has a right to defend itself while demanding an unconditional surrender from Hamas.
He calls the UWM position “not only outlandish but inconsistent with the views of the majority of taxpayers who fund the college.”
He also says the foreign policy stance is bizarre and hopes the UWM doesn’t feel compelled to adopt a foreign policy stance at the request of a noisy few, many of whom he assumes have no connection to the university.
Meanwhile, those pro-Palestinian activists are criticizing University of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman for his stance on an agreement with UW-Milwaukee’s chancellor.
The Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine called for Rothman’s removal by the governor and UW regents, following his critique of the agreement that ended campus protests while seemingly supporting the protesters.
Rothman emphasized the need for content neutrality on UW campuses, but protesters argue that the university should take a stand on the Gaza conflict.
