Two Eastern Wisconsin Senators are condemning the anti-police speech given by Senator Chris Larson of Milwaukee.
In a speech on the Senate Floor, the Democrat from Milwaukee spoke about rooting out the “bad apples” in police departments around the state.
While Sen. Larson did voice support for “those who work in public service who are responsible…those who are in it for the right reasons, and who do have an approach where they are thinking twice before using lethal force,” he he also said that the bad apples “think it’s a sport to shoot at our neighbors, and not to protect and to serve.”
He also said that the bill they were discussing would give police too many protections “so that they cannot be held accountable and can kill with disregard and glee.”
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu was quick to condemn this line of thinking, saying, “Police officers across the state of Wisconsin put their lives on the line every day to ensure our safety. Senator Larson’s reprehensible floor speech is insulting to them and their families.”
Senator Andre Jacque echoed that reaction, also noting, “It is especially shameful for these smears to come during National Police Week. While Sen. Larson was slandering police, the names of five Wisconsin officers killed in the line of duty were about to be engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.”
Both local legislators called for Democrats to condemn Sen. Larson, with Sen. LeMahieu even sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Diane Hesselbein asking her to do just that.
