The Manitowoc Police Department has supplied Seehafer News with its statistics report for March.
The number of calls for service decreased by nearly 100 compared to March 2023, but the number of criminal charges rose.
A total of 166 adult criminal charges were filed last month, which is up from 127 last March, while the 14 juvenile criminal charges are up nine from last year.
Additionally, the year-to-date numbers are up in both categories, with 497 adult charges filed so far (up from 413 at this time last year), and 47 juvenile charges have been filed (up from 17).
While this may seem like a reason to sound the alarm, Police Chief Nick Reimer has previously told us that more charges do not mean more criminal activity.
He explained that the rise in charges could mean his officers and detectives are simply “out there solving crimes.”
Some of those charges could have stemmed from incidents from months, or even years, in the past that are just now being brought into the court system.
