Late last week, Governor Tony Evers vetoed a proposed tax cut for Wisconsinites, which would have expanded a state income tax bracket, cut out retiree income from state taxes, and increased a tax credit for married couples.
His reasoning, according to Wisconsin Public Radio, was that he believed the cut would have “sent Wisconsin on a path toward insolvency.”
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, on the other hand, voiced his frustration, saying, “Allowing $3 billion in taxpayer money to sit in a bank account in Madison while inflation continues to stretch family budgets is unconscionable.”
The Oostburg Senator also noted that this was the third time the governor “used his veto pen to raise taxes on single mothers on food stamps.”
Assembly Speaker Robin Voss agreed with Sen. LeMahieu, calling the tax relief bill “crucial,” and accused the governor of prioritizing politics over practical solutions.
