It will be a busy day at the Manitowoc County Ice Center on Saturday as Manitowoc County Youth Hockey is hosting its second annual Purple Penalty Box fundraiser.
Margret Danforth and Renee Schweigel are a part of the organizational team for the event, and they told Seehafer News that this event is a way to raise funds for a local cancer patient.
The Peewee 12U teams will don lavender jerseys, which Renee explained is symbolic.
“Lavander is the color of all cancers,” she explained. “We wanted everybody, not just one particular type, so we went with the purple-lavender color.”
Margret highlighted the fact that this event is great for the kids.
“It also gives the kids the opportunity to get to know different people in the community,” she said. “Make them aware that there all types of cancers out there and to have some compassion.”
This year, proceeds will go toward helping the family of Richard Opie, who is battling pancreatic cancer.
His wife Charlene actually works with Margret and Renee and is immensely grateful.
“It came out of nowhere,” she recalled. “I think they had been planning it, but I just learned about it a handful of days ago. So, so grateful for that.”
Not only will there be four games played starting at 10:15 a.m., but there will also be a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, raffle baskets, a bake sale, and soup donated by Roadside Cucina and Farmers Home Restaurant.
The full schedule of games can be found on the Manitowoc County Youth Hockey website.
