Residents of Menomonie have voted against a proposed $4 million tax increase intended for the city’s schools.
Election officials report that 59 percent of voters opposed the operating referendum during Tuesday’s ballot.
The Menomonie School District sought additional funds to offset inflationary pressures.
District administrator Joe Zydowsky cautioned voters before the referendum, warning of potential budget cuts or school closures without the additional funding.
Meanwhile, voters in the Cumberland area approved a separate $32 million tax hike earmarked for the expansion and modernization of school facilities.
