Volunteers at the Goodwill in Ashland were surprised last weekend when someone donated a World War Two-era hand grenade.
The store promptly contacted Marathon County’s bomb squad, as the grenade, identified as Japanese, was believed to be live based on the explosion during controlled detonation.
According to Ashland Police Lieutenant Brandon Marten, it appears the grenade was inadvertently placed in a donation box during an attic cleanup, with the donor failing to verify its nature.
