The jury trial has begun for a man who is accused of starting a fire at a bar that killed two people.
Anthony Gonzalez is facing two counts of 2nd Degree Reckless Homicide, five counts of Recklessly Endangering Safety, and one count of Negligent Handling of Burning Material after he allegedly started his bed on fire while lighting a cigarette in his apartment above Butch’s Bar on February 22nd, 2022.
The jury was selected for the trial Monday morning, with seven men and seven women tasked with the job.
However, only twelve will deliberate with the other two set as alternates.
The prosecutors are calling on the jury to determine if Gonzalez’s actions were reckless, while the defense told the jury that it is important to look at all of the facts before making a decision.
The trial is slated to run all week, resuming this morning at 8:10 a.m.
