A local Elks Club Lodge recently presented a check to a local veteran following a fundraiser.
Air Force Veteran Ashley Smits accepted the check from Lodge 687 for a fundraiser she organized during the Army/Navy college football game.
The event brought numerous local and area veterans together to watch the game and to raise money for the Manitowoc County Veterans group, which Smits founded.
Smits has been working to give local veterans a place on Facebook where they can bring that sense of brotherly/sisterly camaraderie that the military brings on a local level.
Tim Ahrens of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge said of the donation, “So long as there are veterans, the benevolent and protective order of the Elks will never forget them.”
