The Chippewa County District Attorney, Wade Neweel, has cited a lack of conclusive facts in deciding on potential charges against Sheriff Travis Hakes.
In a letter to the county’s administrator, Neweel explained the insufficiency of evidence to pursue an official misconduct case against Hakes.
The sheriff has been under scrutiny for both his conduct and his side job selling firearms since assuming office earlier this year.
Despite a county-conducted investigation forwarded to the DA, Neweel deemed the evidence insufficient.
Sheriff Hakes maintains his innocence, attributing the criticism to political adversaries.
