The Wisconsin Assembly voted yesterday to approve the $545 million improvement and repair plan for American Family Field, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
The measure passed on a 69-27 vote, but one legislator who was not on board was Representative Shae Sortwell.
The Two Rivers legislator tells Seehafer News he voted against the measure because he does not believe “state taxpayer r dollars should be used without going to the people via referendum. Until states get together to agree on not getting blackmailed by billionaire sports team owners, I cannot get behind notions like these.”
Sortwell did give credit to the authors of the bill for lowering the amount that would land on the taxpayers, but noted that his constituents were not behind the measure.
The Senate is expected to vote on the bill in November, but if any amendments are attached it would be kicked back to the Assembly.
If the current version makes it to Governor Evers’ desk, he has stated “I’m ready to support it as is.”
