The Barron County Sheriff’s Department has issued a public advisory warning against a scam circulating in the area.
Scammers have been falsely posing as sheriff’s office representatives and making fraudulent phone calls to individuals, demanding a payment of $1,000 for a supposed court-ordered DNA test.
The sheriff’s office took to social media, particularly Facebook, to notify the public about this fraudulent activity.
Officials emphasize that the scammers’ approach involves impersonating law enforcement personnel and coercing individuals into believing they must comply with a court-ordered DNA test, accompanied by a demand for payment in the form of a gift card.
The threat of arrest is used as leverage to pressure victims into making this payment.
Authorities want to clarify that such tactics are not in accordance with the proper legal procedures and should be treated as scams.
If you receive a call of this nature, it is recommended to immediately disconnect the call and not engage with the scammers.
The Sheriff’s Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community by addressing and publicizing these fraudulent activities.
