In a groundbreaking decision marking a first for the state of Wisconsin, a judge has ruled in favor of parents in a dispute over a school district’s gender policy.
On the recent ruling by a Waukesha County judge, it was determined that Kevin Marine Schools’ approach to managing the situation of a middle school girl who had undergone a social transition at school was flawed.
The girl’s parents had requested that the school address their daughter by her given name, but teachers and school administrators persisted in using a different name.
The judge emphasized that the crux of the matter was not about parents exerting control over their children’s education but rather centered on parents’ prerogative to make medical decisions on behalf of their children—a right deemed fundamental.
Additionally, the judge criticized Kettle Moraine Schools for not implementing a formal written policy regarding gender transitions and instead opting to address such matters on a case-by-case basis.
