A Waukesha alderman, Cory Payne, has been sentenced to probation for his involvement in an incident where he struck his girlfriend’s child with enough force to leave a visible red handprint.
The sentencing occurred in court yesterday, where Payne faced charges of both misdemeanor battery and felony disorderly conduct, to which he pleaded guilty.
The incident unfolded in February when law enforcement officers were called to the scene.
Reports indicated that Payne was under the influence of alcohol and had engaged in a heated argument with his girlfriend.
When the child attempted to intervene in the dispute, Payne resorted to slapping the child on the leg, leaving a noticeable mark.
Despite the legal repercussions, Cory Payne continues to hold his position on the Waukesha City Council.
However, the fate of his role in the council remains uncertain.
The city’s mayor announced yesterday that there is ongoing deliberation within the council regarding whether Payne should be voted off or if the voters will choose to initiate a recall process.
