This week, Wisconsin legislators are poised to initiate a significant change aimed at increasing the hurdles for tax hikes within the state.
The State Assembly is set to cast their votes on a constitutional amendment that seeks to mandate a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature as a prerequisite for any tax increases.
The primary objective is to prevent the governor, as well as future governors, from unilaterally implementing tax hikes. Notably, this proposal garners support from the Republican camp while facing opposition from Democrats.
For this amendment to take effect, it must secure approval from the legislature this year and once more next year.
Only after passing these legislative hurdles will Wisconsin voters have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the matter in 2024.
