Last week we spoke about veteran suicide, and how to prevent it. Another way to help battle PTSD and thought of uselessness is to join one or more of the many veterans groups that are in the area. A lot of people may have heard of several of them, but may not know the differences and requirements needed to join them. The three most well know groups are the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Todd Brehmer of the Manitowoc County Veteran Service Office explains the difference.
Another well know group is the American Veterans, or AmVets, which is a group that fills in the gaps, ensuring every veteran van belong to a group. Brehmer explains a misconception surrounding these groups.
There many more programs as well, filling basically any qualification you can imagine. If you wish to join any of these groups, stop down to the County Veteran Office at 1701 Michigan Ave, in Manitowoc for more information about the different veteran groups.
