Senator Andre Jacque has introduced a new law aimed at adding sexual abuse programs in schools.
According to the De Pere Senator, Erin’s Law aims to require school districts with human growth and development curricula to include child sexual abuse prevention training for public school personnel and students in those programs.
The measure is named after Erin Merryn who is an author, speaker, advocate – and survivor of sexual abuse as a child.
Erin’s Law is already on the books in Illinois, Merryn’s home state and 37 additional states have since followed.
In a news release, Sen. Jacque explained, “In states where the bill has been passed, there are several examples of children coming forward to report their sexual assault after going through the sexual abuse program in school, resulting in sexual predators being put behind bars. It is past time for Wisconsin to take this important step to protect our children by enacting this measure.”
The legislation is supported by Wisconsin Family Action.
