The Brown County Clerk of Courts is warning residents of a scam that has hit the area.
This one is called the jury scam, and it is where fraudsters pose as law enforcement and accuse people of not showing up for a scheduled jury assignment.
As is the case in most scam cases, the caller tells the target that they either need to turn themselves in to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office or send a cash or gift card payment via the mail.
A statement from the Clerk of Courts Office stated bluntly, “There is no situation where it would be necessary for jurors to send cash or gift cards for missing jury service.”
As a general scam avoidance tip, most organizations and entities will not require payment via mail to be cash or prepaid gift cards.
If you are ever concerned about a call you receive from someone claiming to be with an organization or entity, you can always hang up and call their actual number for clarification.
If you have been the target of this or any other scam, you are encouraged to call your local law enforcement agency and give them as much detail about the scam as possible.
