A 12-year-old boy drowned in Lake Michigan at Neshotah Beach over the weekend.
According to the Two Rivers Police Department, the young boy was swimming in the Lake just before noon Saturday (August 19th) when he disappeared under the water.
The Water Rescue Teams from the Two Rivers and Manitowoc Fire Departments as well as the Sheriff’s Department’s Drone and Dive Teams, and a Coast Guard Helicopter were all called to the scene to search for the boy.
He was eventually located about half of a mile north of where he was last seen.
Life-saving measures were taken, and the child was taken to Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s name is being withheld due to his age and out of respect for the family.
Two Rivers Police Chief Benjamin Meinnert issued a reminder to those who swim in Lake Michigan encouraging everyone to “exercise caution while enjoying time in or near any body of water, and know your physical limitations, utilize Personal Floatation Devices and avoid the water during beach warnings.”
