The Chilton Police Department is warning residents of a group of people targeting local residents with what is known as the “Grandparent Scam”.
The scammers have been disguising their phone numbers to match someone the target knows and will have some kind of voice changer to sound very similar to them.
The Chilton PD noted that “They seem to target grandparents and pretend that they are their grandchildren in desperate need of money for some story they make up.”
The scammer will then say a loved one is in jail and needs bail money.
They typically ask the target not to call the police and to stay on the phone.
As has been echoed by many entities over the years, the Chilton law enforcement team advises everyone to “be wary of people asking you for money. DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY to people over the phone! These scammers are always creating new ways to trick people and they are getting very good at it!”
Additionally, you should never give anyone access to your computer, date of birth, social security number, or any other personal information.
