The Manitowoc American Legion baseball team used a 7 run 3rd inning to keep their state championship hopes alive and knock out the Appleton Double Days.
The final score in Marinette Thursday afternoon was 10-1. Appleton struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, but RBI doubles from Dan Schmitz and Brock Peterson would lead the 3rd inning surge.
Peterson ended up going 3-4 driving in 3 runs while Schmitz went 2-4, also with 3 RBI. Nathan Stephany and Damien Gretz each also had a pair of hits for Manitowoc, who scattered 15 hits on the day.
Peterson also pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and notching three strikeouts. Post 88 is one of four teams remaining in the double-elimination AAA State tournament.
Eau Claire, Janesville, and Sheboygan are also alive and will battle it out to see who is the best AAA team in Wisconsin.
Two games will be played today at 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. with the final two teams squaring off for the championship at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. if necessary.
