Governor Tony Evers Official Portrait
Governor Tony Evers has reached a historic milestone by granting a new round of pardons, bringing his total number of pardons to over one thousand.
On Friday, the governor issued 96 additional pardons, primarily focusing on individuals who had been arrested for drug-related offenses many years ago.
It’s important to note that the governor’s pardoning action does not expunge their records entirely, but it does grant them the opportunity to serve on juries once again and hold public office.
This move is seen as a step towards offering a second chance and reintegration for those who have demonstrated rehabilitation and growth since their past convictions.
Since his election in 2018, Governor Evers has remained committed to the pardon process, showing a willingness to consider each case individually.
The latest 96 pardons bring the total number of people granted clemency under his administration to an impressive 1,029, surpassing the previous record held by Former Governor Julius Heil.
Governor Heil had granted 943 pardons during his tenure between 1939 and 1943.
