Today is all about a local invention that is enjoyed all over the world.
The City of Two Rivers will be honoring the invention of the ice cream sundae this evening with their annual Sundae Thursday celebration.
City Manager Greg Buckley tells us that Ed Burners concocted the first sundae ever in 1881 in the Cool City.
There are other cities that lay claim to inventing the sweet treat, including Ithaca New York.
“They can even show a newspaper ad from 1892 that shows that they had sundaes at the Platt and Holtz Drug Store in downtown Ithaca,” Buckley explained. “But you know what, by my math, 1892 is about 11 years later than 1881.”
While Ithaca and Evanston Illinois both believe they are the home of the ice cream sundae, Two Rivers has a historical marker in Central Park that makes them the official owners of the distinction.
In celebration, everyone is invited to Central Park from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. to get a sundae for only a quarter.
There will also be an ice cream eating contest at 6:00 p.m. and the Two Rivers Community Band will perform at 6:30.
Buckley also noted that Sundae Thursday is “actually the lead off to a big weekend that’s followed by, on Friday and Saturday, the Cool City Classic Car Show and Cruise, and Beach Bash over at Nashotah Beach.”
