There are questions to answer about a welfare check in western Wisconsin that ended with a deadly officer-involved shooting.
It took place in Vernon County on Friday night. According to the sheriff, deputies were sent to Genoa to conduct a welfare check when they observed the subject of their inquiry driving away from their residence.
The person was stopped by the deputies, but he or she then took off running, dragging one of the deputies behind.
Uncertainty exists regarding who actually shot and killed the driver—a different deputy or the deputy who was being dragged.
Both deputies were unharmed. The case is currently being handled by the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation.
