Governor Tony Evers Official Portrait
According to Governor Evers, unless there are additional changes, he won’t sign the proposal to alter how children in Wisconsin are taught to read.
Yesterday, the governor’s office reiterated its commitment to vetoing the proposal because it might force some fourth graders to enroll in third grade reading courses.
Because lawmakers wanted to hold back children if they weren’t reading at grade level by the fourth grade, the governor earlier in the week pledged to veto the proposal.
This week, Republican lawmakers abandoned that aspect of the strategy.
The governor’s ultimatum, according to state representative Joel Kitchens, will probably lead to the failure of the years-in-the-making plan.
According to legislators, roughly 70% of fourth graders in Wisconsin are unable to read at grade level.
