The latest Wisconsin shared revenue plan does away with the requirement that voters approve increases in the sales tax in Milwaukee and Milwaukee County.
In principle, Republican leaders and Governor Tony Evers have reached an agreement that permits Milwaukee and Milwaukee County to increase their taxes while also splitting $500 million with other local governments in the state.
The agreement was reached about 24 hours after threats from Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to remove the Milwaukee-only provisions of the agreement and move forward without the governor.
By a two-thirds vote of the city council or county board, the new tax proposal would permit the city and county to raise their sales taxes.
