Protesters at a rally involving more than 75 community activists demanded action from Milwaukee city leaders on the city’s lead problem. Speakers at City Hall were demanding answers, calling it a “fundamental public health issue. One of those 20 speakers accused the mayor, the Common Council, the health department and other city leaders of conducting a cover-up. A report issued last month revealed the Milwaukee Health Department fell short of its responsibilities in the city’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The parents of more than 200 children who tested positive for elevated lead levels in their blood were apparently never informed.
