The mayor of Milwaukee claims that the city is “on the path to catastrophic budget cuts.”
As state senators began their hearings Tuesday on the proposal to distribute $500 million to local governments throughout the state, Mayor Cavalier Johnson addressed the group.
A shared revenue plan is being examined by the Senate.
It differs from the proposal approved by the Assembly last week in that it would not necessitate voter approval for local sales tax increases in Milwaukee or Milwaukee County.
Without providing specific figures, Johnson said yesterday that Milwaukee’s police and fire departments would be severely cut and that the city would go bankrupt in 2025 if the shared revenue plan fails.
