The fire on Milwaukee’s south side last week that destroyed four homes and claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter may have been caused by a charcoal barbecue, according to fire investigators.
According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, on Wednesday, Maria Castillo Cortez, 27, was using a barbecue outside her house.
Firefighters discovered the house in flames, but Cortez and her 16-month-old daughter’s remains weren’t discovered until the following day.
The four homes were destroyed, but no one else was wounded in the incident.
